The old fashioned ballad is something of a dying breed – excluding popifed efforts from the likes of Adele and One Direction – so it’s nice to see one every once in a while. Especially when they come packaged like Barns Courtney’s latest offering ‘Goodbye John Smith’.
No frills needed – simple-yet-moving piano frames the transatlantic newcomer’s gravely baritone in the most uncomplicated but effective way. The resultant ballad being one any ’90s Alt-Country/Folk outfit would be delighted with. And with 2016 just around the corner, the new year is looking to be quite promising for the singer-songwriter.
